We now have more data on the severity of the demographic decline in Russia. This started with World War II, where about twenty million Russians died. Many of them were men, so the demographic curve was significantly skewed, and I mean seriously so.
This image is from Russian demographic statistics. And, yes, you can see the echoes of the Great Patriotic War.
Here is where we stand with this demographic crisis. And it is darker than just growing the population. It is another reminder of what Vladimir.
Putin thinks of his people. I have called him a Tsar in the past, well, here we are:
Frontline women in labor. The Kremlin has reduced adoption abroad to zero, and fellow citizens are not happy with orphans. But the authorities require women to give birth at 16, deliberately complicating the lives of future generations
In the new episode of the program “We Can Explain,” we tell you how they are trying to force Russians to have more children — and why they don’t want to.
📺 Entertainment TV channels have joined the propaganda of pregnancy. “Mom at 16”, “Pregnant at 45”, “Pregnant by Deception” — this is only a small part of the programs calling on Russian women to give birth in any way and from anyone. The word “abortion” is banned there. All the problems of mothers are solved as if by magic. “Nobody needs children giving birth to nobody needs children,” — viewers are indignant.
🎓 The Kremlin is trying to increase the birth rate — with both carrot and stick. Students and even schoolgirls are offered pregnancy benefits, women are offered a shorter working day, and employers are expected to monitor the “birth rate” in their workforce. At the same time, the authorities are restricting access to abortions, fining people for “inducing” and punishing those promoting childfree.
🤱 At the same time, the number of children born in the country has fallen to the level of the 18th century . Economic instability, war and the “echo of the 90s” prevent society from reproducing itself. We figure out what’s going on with demographer Alexey Raksha.
😔Our children should die in their homeland: in 13 years, the Kremlin has reduced international adoption to zero, and is breeding a population of orphanages. Why is there no rush to take orphans into families in a “staple” country? Real stories of children from Russian orphanages who have experienced violence.

Igor EIDMAN, soci”Putin perceives Russia as an estate with serfs. The livestock must increase, and the land must grow.” Sociologist Eidman on the authorities’ attempts to force women to bear childrenThe head of the State Duma Committee for the Protection of the Family, Nina Ostanina, proposed paying maternity capital for the birth of each child (not just the first and second) — and increasing its amount by a quarter each time. State support measures will not force Russian women to give birth more often, sociologist Igor EYDMAN said in an interview with MO.
💬”The very idea of ensuring that Russia begins to experience natural population growth is one of Putin’s obsessions . He is a man of primitive views, from the 19th century , and he perceives Russia as an estate with serfs. The number of serfs must increase and the territory, the land, must grow. These are the two criteria for the effectiveness of the head of state, according to Putin — for the territory to increase and the population to increase.”
Thus, condoms may soon be banned in Russia , the sociologist says ironically: “I think Putin really doesn’t like that people, instead of giving birth to serfs for him, are simply having fun.”
💬 Russian women are not ready to give birth to more children in the current conditions . “In conditions of war and economic instability, people have no confidence in the future. In such a situation, having children, especially more than one or two, is a big risk .”
And it gets far worse. It is essential to understand how the nation's leader views his people. I suspect there is some commonality with our current president, but that is another story. I think we need to be very precise about where Russia is, because it has returned to a different era, with a very different social contract:
